An official in Maharashtra’s Pune city stated on Tuesday that a 40-year-old food delivery employee was detained for allegedly abusing a 19-year-old female student.

The event occurred on Saturday in the Kondhwa region when the engineering student used an online food aggregator app to get meals from an eatery.

“After delivering the parcel to the woman at around 9 pm on Saturday, the accused – Raees Shaikh – asked for water to drink. While drinking water, he struck up a conversation with the woman and asked details about her native place and college,” an official from Kondhwa police station said.

The accused compared himself to the woman’s uncle and requested her to tell him if she needed anything. According to the official, he also texted her but deleted it right away.

“The man then asked for another glass of water and when the woman gave it to him, he allegedly held her hand and molested her,” the official said.

“When the woman raised an alarm, the accused tried to run away but some people from the housing society caught him and handed him over to police,” he said.

The lady then approached police and filed a complaint.

According to the official, the offender was detained and charged under Indian Penal Code Sections 354 (outraging a woman’s modesty) and 354-A (sexual harassment).

He was eventually freed on bond, according to the police.
